Our Story
The Story of Aline and Daniel
This is the story of Aline and Daniel, a former refugee couple who came to the United States in 2014 after spending 10 years in a refugee camp in Uganda. We fled from the Democratic Republic of Congo, escaping the violent massacres and ongoing war caused by the M23 rebel group—a conflict that has already claimed the lives of over six million people through mass killings and sexual violence.
When we arrived in the United States, we were filled with despair and confusion. Everything was new—the language, the system, the culture—and we had no one to guide us. We struggled with basic things like how to use public transportation, how to apply for jobs without speaking English, and how to shop at a supermarket. It was our first time experiencing snow. I still remember the day we went to sleep with empty stomachs—not because we lacked money, but because we had no one to show us how to catch a bus to the grocery store. We didn’t even know how to use the EBT card for food assistance.
Once, the bus driver left me behind simply because I hadn’t applied deodorant. I was about to cry—it was a new culture for me, and no one had ever explained it to me simple because am coming from a place i couldn't afford a Deodorant .
These painful experiences are what inspired us to create this program—to support and guide other newcomers and refugees who arrive in the U.S., so they don’t have to suffer the same way we did.
Today, we are proud citizens of the United States. Despite the challenges, we both returned to school and earned our high school diplomas. Studying while raising children was not easy, but it was a decision we made for our future. My husband, who was a doctor in our home country, chose to start over and earn his diploma here in the U.S., showing true strength and humility.
We now dedicate our lives to encouraging and supporting new refugees and immigrants so they can succeed just like we did. Our message is simple: with hope, support, and perseverance, you can rebuild your life.
